Dear APEX Collaboration members,

  • More help is needed with development of software for VDC analysis, detector calibration analysis, and beam/target monitoring. If you can help or have a student who can, please contact the spokespeople and appropriate group leader using the links below.

Below is a summary of recent activity and current priorities for the sub-groups.

Status Report and Priority Activities for the Coming Week

Detector Preparation and Installation

Group: Bogdan Wojtsekhowsi (leader), Jack Segal, Doug Higinbotham, Albert Shahinyan

The detector team has tested the S0 counters, ordered a 2nd frame for the S0 counter, and started cabling for the lead glass counters in coordination with PREX.

Target

Group: Kenneth Moffeit (leader), Dieter Walz, Clive Field, Marco Oriunno, John Jaros, Takashi Maruyama, Allen Odian, Dave Meekins, Bogdan Wojtsekhowski, Alan Gavalya, Ed Folts

Target engineering drawings have been sent to the manufacturer for a price quote and procurement will begin soon. Near final drawings can be found here.

The meeting organized by Kees, Dave, Ed, and Jack selected the water-fall target lifter for the APEX target. This will allow preparations for DVCS and APEX to be decoupled, and resolve one of the conditions for an APEX test run in June 2010. The lifter needs to installed on the scattering chamber after the PREX experiment. It will take at least two weeks of work for the Hall A technical crew. The mechanism needs to be re-commissioned in advance. The adapter needs to be designed and constructed for attachment of the target to the lifter.

If you can help with preparation of the lifter, please contact the spokespeople.

Optics

Group: Vincent Sulkosky (leader), Jin Huang, Doug Higinbotham, John LeRose, Tim Holmstrom

The optics group is testing optics optimization tools, and has also taken responsibility for beam and target monitoring tools. For a status update and list of tasks, please see the Optics and Beam Analysis Tools wiki page. If you can help with the monitoring tools, please contact Vince and the spokespeople.

In addition, Vince has started development of an optics run plan and raster and beam-position scan procedures.

Septa and Beam Line

Group: John LeRose (leader), Paul Brindza, Ed Folts, Jack Segal

Space was found in front of the septum magnet for a small compensation magnet. The dipole magnet based on the Nb permanent magnets was constructed. It provides 25-28 kGcm field integral which will allow better configuration of the beam line.

VDC Analysis

Group: Ole Hansen (leader), Michael Paolone, Guy Ron

The development of the necessary software and tools to analyze high rate VDC data are in progress. More help is needed -- please contact Ole and the spokespeople if you can help.

Analysis Tools

Group: Ishay Pomerantz (leader), Eli Piasetzky, Ran Shneor, Mathew Graham, Eric Jensen, Victor Maxwell, Sergey Abrahamyan

The development of analysis and calibration tools is ongoing. More help is needed -- if you are able to help, or have a student that wants to get involved, please contact Ishay and the spokespeople.

Members of the Analysis Team should plan to be on site during the running of the experiment, so that the detectors can be calibrated quickly.

Sergey has put some information on a dedicated APEX wiki page. Analysis Team members are encouraged to follow the instructions under "Analysis Tools, How To" and look at the README file.

Additional Remarks

A workshop on A' physics at JLab is being planned in order to review the experiments proposed for A' searches (including APEX and proposals for Hall B and the FEL), and to further inform a decision at the laboratory on which experiments to pursue in detail. It has tentatively been scheduled for September 10-11. More details will follow in a few weeks.

Finally, we encourage everyone to provide us with feedback and suggestions as we prepare for the Test Run this June.

Thank you and kind regards,

Rouven, Philip, Natalia, and Bogdan (APEX spokespeople)
